What is the difference between 911 and E911?

With the current 911 services, the VRS provider does not have customer address information on file and customers must sign their address to the interpreter in the case of an emergency. With Enhanced 911 (E911) the VRS provider has the customer address information on file and simply asks the caller to verify that information during the emergency call. Videophone users can keep their address information updated by visiting www.sorensonvrs.com/moving, dialing 800-659-4810, or through the location button on their videophone. The videophone will also ask the user to confirm the address every time it reboots.

How do I place a 911 Call?

All 911 emergency calls made through Sorenson VRS receive priority attention-your 911 call will be immediately sent to the first available interpreter.

To use Sorenson VRS (SVRS) to make an emergency call, use the number keys on your remote to enter 911 in the dial field, highlight, and hit enter. You do NOT need to enter E before 911. Be ready to give the interpreter your name and to tell them the address of the emergency.

Although Sorenson VRS is an option for you to use in an emergency, you should keep a TTY available. During a power outage or an Internet connection failure you would not be able to use your videophone to make a 911 emergency call using Sorenson VRS. Your TTY should work in those situations if it is equipped with a backup battery.
